Developing Countries Task Force

The Developing Countries (DCTF) Task Force addresses the specific, educational needs of oncology healthcare specialists in developing countries*

* Developing countries are defined by ESMO according to the latest World Bank statistics of countries with a Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) per capita of less than $10,000 per annum. Information available online at http://www.worldbank.org/

Activities and responsibilities

  • Supporting oncology specialists in less affluent countries
  • Sharing knowledge
  • Providing input for new topics for ESMO Clinical Practice Guidelines
  • Improving local healthcare infrastructures
  • Promoting the ESMO Examination
  • Organizing meetings and educational programs
  • Researching and compiling statistics on the status of oncology in developing countries
  • Liaising with other ESMO committees, providing information about developing countries
  • Serving as a point of reference for developing regions

Major achievements

2012 ESMO supports World Cancer Day 2012 - Essential medicines for all! The ‘Morphine Manifesto’ compliments the ESMO-led international collaborative project on access to essential medicines for pain management
2011 International collaborative project on the availability and barriers to access of opioids to cancer patients in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Project expands on original ESMO/EAPC European survey published in Annals of Oncology in March 2010.
2010 Afrox-ESMO Cancer Prevention 4 Africa awareness, prevention and early detection campaign.
