Spaarne Ziekenhuis is a community-based teaching hospital with 455 beds in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands. In 2013 the hospital opened a newly built cancer centre where all specialists concerned with cancer patients are based and where our patients are provided with patient-centred cancer care. For that purpose a ‘satellite’ radiotherapy department of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek was opened within the new cancer centre.

Areas of specialisation
The cancer centre of the Spaarne Ziekenhuis has departments for diagnostic facilities related to cancer and special units for medical oncology, pulmonary oncology and surgical oncology. Multidisciplinary teams/tumor boards coordinate and control the diagnostics and treatment for our patients.
Palliative and supportive care
There is a strong integration between the palliative medicine services and oncology, as all medical oncologists participate in the palliative care team, which can be consulted 24/7. In addition the palliative care team consists of four oncology nurse practitioners, a social worker, a chaplain, two residents in internal medicine and a consultant in palliative medicine. In the outpatient clinic the consultant in palliative medicine has office hours once a week in collaboration with the medical, surgical and pulmonary oncologists and nurse practitioners. For inpatients the consultant in palliative medicine is available for direct consultation twice a week.
There is a small palliative care unit integrated within the medical oncology ward; there is one ‘suite’ specifically designated for palliative care patients and we plan to expand to four beds in 2014.
