King Abdullah Medical City – Oncology Center in Holy Makkah started receiving cancer patients in November 2010. It is the major quaternary care oncology centre in the western and southern territories of the Kingdom Saudi Arabia. The centre's goal is to be internationally recognised as an accredited center for oncology and palliative care, as well as a leading educational and research centre, which endorses the highest possible ethical standards and quality of care.
The oncology centre at KAMC-Makkah includes four main departments: medical oncology, palliative care, hemato-oncology and radiation oncology. In addition there is a pathology laboratory, clinical pharmacy and inpatients department. There are 57 beds for inpatients, 30 clinics every week and 15 chemotherapy treatment areas.
Services are provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The centre is part of a large hospital that provides intensive care and emergency services and all the possible consultations that might be needed for cancer patients. A highly-qualified department cares for patient experience, patient safety and continuous improvement. The centre is hoping to expand soon and open a bone marrow transplantation unit.
Seventeen qualified consultants and 18 qualified assistant consultants work as one team to decrease mortality and alleviate the suffering from cancer. Education and research are part of the plan to improve quality of cancer care. The team has published more than 60 articles in well-recognised scientific journals, and are hoping to establish a clinical trials and research centre soon.
Areas of specialisation
The centre delivers a full service starting from diagnosis, work up, staging, treatment, palliative and symptoms management through to end-of-life care. The team delivers all types of chemotherapy and targeted therapy and provides the full spectrum of radiation oncology services. Patients are received from all hospitals in the Kingdom and work with other specialities as interdisciplinary teams to give the best possible care.
Palliative and supportive care
The Palliative Care team at KAMC-Makkah is a wel-trained and qualified team delivering symptoms management, supportive care and end-of-life services. The palliative service is fully integrated with other oncology services throughout the treatment course. The centre has palliative care clinics, 12 inpatient beds and a team of nurses and doctors as well as home care services. The team has had have several publications related to improving quality of palliative care published internationally.
