Professor Sofia Braga has been working as a medical oncologist at the José de Mello Saúde Network of Hospitals in Lisbon, Portugal, since 2013. She treats mainly breast and gastrointestinal cancer.
Born in 1973 in Lisbon, she studied Medicine at the Lisbon Medical School until 1998 and concluded her postgraduate training at the National Cancer Center in Lisbon, where she worked until 2011.
Prof. Braga completed her PhD work at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (Oeiras, Portugal) focusing her research on centrosome clustering in breast cancer, and received her doctorate degree from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
She is currently Assistant Professor at the Algarve Medical School, where she has been working since its inception in 2009 and teaches both medical students at undergraduate level and biologists at postgraduate level.
She has performed translational and epidemiological research in breast and gastrointestinal cancer, securing national funding from the National Science Foundation and other organisations. Her interests include also end of life issues, an area she has been carrying out research into since 2007 with international funding.
She has been involved in numerous clinical trials (5 clinical trials at present) and is a member of the SOLTI clinical trials group.
She has served in the National Guideline Committee (under the Ministry of Health) and in the Portuguese Senology Society’s Guideline Committee.
She has been a member of ESMO and ASCO since 2005. Within ESMO, she holds position in different committees and groups, e.g. the ESMO Examination and Accreditation Working Group, the ESMO Publishing Working Group and the ESMO Practising Oncologists Committee.
