Ramon Salazar, MD, PhD, MSc, is the Head of Translational Research at the Catalan Institute of Oncology and of the Early Clinical Research Unit at the Medical Oncology Department of the Institut Català d’Oncologia in L´Hospitalet de Llobregat in Barcelona, Spain. He is also in charge of the colorectal and neuroendocrine tumour clinics and research programmes in the GI unit at the Institute.
He was awarded his degree as a specialist in Medical Oncology in 1997, and his PhD in 1999 by the Hospital Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Barcelona. He followed his PhD with a research fellow position at the Beatson Oncology Centre (Cancer Research Campaign) in Glasgow, Scotland, as a recipient of an ESMO clinical fellowship grant, where he received specific training in phase I clinical trials and new drug development. He also trained at the Neuroendocrine Oncology Unit of the University of Uppsala, Sweden, under the direction of Kjell Öberg, specialising in the management of NETs.
Dr Salazar has been a member of ESMO for more than 12 years and a board member of the Spanish Cooperative Group for Gastrointestinal Tumour Therapy (TTD Group). He also serves as a member of the Executive Committee of the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (ENETS).
He has published approximately 50 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals and written numerous book chapters and monographs, as well as on-line content. He has also organised a number of symposia and teaching activities at institutes including the University of Barcelona and the European School of Oncology.
