Centre history

The University of Colorado Cancer Center, which was founded in 1988, provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer care to patients in Colorado and the region. In addition, the center conducts basic, translational and clinical research and educates. Structured as a matrix center within the University of Colorado School of Medicine, the CU Cancer Center is an NCI-recognized consortium comprehensive cancer center encompassing the University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado State University, National Jewish Health, University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Denver Health, Kaiser Permanente of Colorado, and the Denver Veterans Administration Medical Center. The University of Colorado Cancer Center was elected a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network in 2013. It is one of only 44 centers in the U.S. designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Department profile

The University of Colorado (CU) Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Colorado serving a primary catchment area for Colorado, Wyoming and surrounding states with a population of ~5.5 million. The University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) is the primary adult teaching hospital and where the majority of CU Cancer Center clinical care is delivered and clinical research is conducted.The Cancer Center has 45,000 visits annually; the outpatient facility has an infusion center with 38 infusion chairs and beds. The University of Colorado Hospital also has a community satellite site that sees a variety of cancer diagnoses. The University Health System Consortium named UCH the #1 academic medical center in quality in the nation in 2011 and again in 2012. U.S. News & World Report ranks University of Colorado Cancer Center among the nation’s top 25 cancer centers and named UCH the best hospital in Colorado in 2013.

Palliative and supportive care

Clinicians from the palliative care team are available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week to either provide expert advice to the primary treating team or to provide consultation to address unrelieved physical and psychological symptoms for oncology patients who are hospitalized on the inpatient oncology service. The Oncology Care team can also be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide stabilization of patient symptoms. Patients also have access to a 4-bed inpatient palliative care unit that is co-located with the oncology inpatient service at University of Colorado Hospital. These beds are staffed by specially trained nurses; palliative care consultation will be required for patients admitted to these beds for symptom stabilization.
