University Hospital of Lord's Transfiguration in Poznan was founded by the Sisters of Charity St. Vincent a'Paulo Convent in XIX century. Throughout the years the Hospital has changed its name and organizational structure few times. The oncology department was first established in 1976. In 1986 professor Jacek Luczak the pioneer of palliative/hospice care in Poland established the first out-patient pain clinic and in 1989 he started home care for patients with the advanced diseases discharged from Poznan's hospitals. At present the University Hospital of Lord Transfiguration is one of the five University Hospitals in Poznan.
Hospital of Lord's Transfiguration provides a wide range of specialized medical services with cardiology, ophthalmology and oncology being the main fields. Oncological care includes a wide range of services related to cancer diseases and terminal illnesses: Oncology Chair with Cancer Surgery, Gynaecology, Chemotherapy Departments, Pneumology and Haematology Chairs and as well as Palliative Care Chair. Hospice Palium comprises Palliative Care Out-patient Clinic with home care, two in-patient units with 25 beds, Pain Clinic, Day Care Centre, Physiotherapy Unit and Lymphoedema Clinic. Palliative Care Service provides holistic home care for over 1,000 advanced cancer patients in Poznan and in the region of up to 30 kilometres around the city a year. 370 patients are hospitalized in-patient units.
As a division of University School of Medical Sciences we are involved in pre- and postgraduate education and research in the field of oncology and palliative care.
There are 72 hours of oncology and 53 hours of palliative care in the curricula of medical students. The hospital organizes yearly a wide range of post-graduate courses and training for oncologists, surgeons, internists and palliative care specialists.
