History and Profile
Queen Mary Hospital was founded in 1937. The hospital provides comprehensive medical and surgical services. It is a tertiary and quaternary referral centre for many complex conditions such as transplant, neonatal intensive care, paediatric surgery, assisted reproduction, oral maxillofacial surgery & dental surgery, burns and reconstructive surgery and neurosurgery for the whole territory. It is also a teaching hospital of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong.
The Department of Clinical Oncology of Queen Mary Hospital is an oncology centre which provides comprehensive cancer therapies including active oncological treatment and holistic palliative care. Ranges of treatment offered include outpatient chemotherapy, targeted therapies, inpatient infusional chemotherapy, chemoirradiation and a full spectrum of radiotherapy including intensity-modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, brachytherapy and radioisotopes.
Palliative and supportive care
Palliative care provided by the Department of Clinical Oncology is multi-disciplinary and specialist led with oncologists qualified in both Clinical Oncology and Palliative medicine. It is closely integrated into oncology services and it strives to provide a comprehensive and continuous service when cancer patients enter into an incurable phase.
The service offers palliative care out-patient clinic, consultative service, a day centre for diversional activities and short respite, home care service, child bereavement programme and adult bereavement service and in-patient hospice care.
The palliative care multidisciplinary team is comprised of:
- 5 oncologists ( 2 qualified in both Clinical Oncology and Palliative Medicine)
- Palliative nurses
- Home care nurse
- Social worker
- Clinical psychologist
- Physiotherapist, occupational therapist, dietitian, medical social worker, chaplain and volunteers
