The Oncology Unit of Brindisi was instituted in 1991. Until 2000 it was placed in Di Summa Hospital in the Center of Brindisi. On July 2000 it was transferred to A. Perrino Hospital, a new ten-storey building, built in the Nineties, placed along the old Via Appia that connects Taranto to Brindisi. From 2007, with Prof. Cinieri, it became Operating Unit Complex (U.O.C.) and Breast Cancer Uni.
The U.O.C. Oncology Department of A. Perrino Hospital, Brindisi, Italy, has access to facilities and staff members that guarantee: cancer diagnosis, cancer treatment (surgery, radiation therapy, medical oncology), palliative and supportive care (physiotherapy rehabilitation, psychological support, pain management, management of terminally ill patients, hospice care) and alternative methods of complementary medicine (for example, clinical nutrition). Our staff consists of 11 Medical Oncologists, 21 nurses, two psycho-oncologists and two Data Managers. Two of the 11 Medical Oncologists (Dr. Nacci Angelo and Dr. D'Amico Maria) are also experts in Palliative Cares. The ward has 12 beds dedicated to inpatients (active treatment for cancer, together with supportive care for cancer related/unrelated symptoms or with symptoms deriving from different cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy), 10 are used for all the needs of the outpatients and 10 chairs for chemotherapy.
The U.O.C. Oncology Department of A. Perrino Hospital, guarantees healthcare and assistance to cancer patients at every stage of disease (cancer diagnosis, cancer treatment, management of treatment side-effects, physiotherapy rehabilitation, psychological support for cancer patients and their families, pain control management, nutritional support, management of terminal cancer patients, hospice care). Our facilities and staff members can assure continuity of care, even in those patients who no longer benefit from conventional therapies, by guaranteeing specific programmes of palliative and supportive care (thereby avoiding patient abandonment).
Palliative and supportive care
The staff of Palliative and Supportive Care of the Oncology Unit consists of two Medical Oncologists experts in Palliative Cares, one psycho-oncologist and 12 nurses. A Home Care Service (assured by ANT, a non-profit care organization at no-charge) is available for all cancer patients. The Hospice Care Service is at our disposal and guarantee expertise in healthcare at home or in hospice facilities. It is placed 28 kilometres in our territory and its name is San Cesareo Hospice. Ten more beds are being set up in 10 kilometres. Staff members of the Home Care Service and the Oncology Unit are constantly in-touch and work side-by-side, to assure continuity of care. Our Oncology Department can also manage terminal cancer patients, if necessary.
