History

The department of internal medicine 3, haematology, oncology and palliative care was founded in 2002 and is integrated in the “Klinikum Frankfurt Höchst”, a hospital for maximum care. The hospital serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Frankfurt.

Profile

20 Departments with 1000 beds, including an intensive care unit, 2200 employees and almost all medical sub-specialities are integrated in the ‟Klinikum Frankfurt Höchst“. The department of haematology, oncology and palliative care has two wards with a total of  35 beds, including the palliative care unit, as well as  an outpatient facility (10 comfortable seats to receive chemotherapy and supportive care) where 3 physicians and 6 nurses take care of cancer patients. Besides the head of department, 2 physicians are specialized in Haematology and Medical Oncology. The head of the department is also specialized in palliative care. Five of the nurses are specialized in palliative care.
A 24-hour/7-day telephone hotline is available for our patients at home, their relatives, their general practitioners or other medical professionals. The oncology service coordinates the therapy of about 1000 patients each year. There is a weekly tumour board with surgical departments, radiology and pathology services as well as radiation therapy physicians. With the exception of stem cell transplantation, all systemic therapies are provided in our hospital. More than 7000 chemotherapies are given each year.

Palliative and supportive care

The palliative care unit was established in 2008 and is included in the oncologic ward. Symptom control and comprehensive supportive care are treatment objectives throughout the curative, palliative or symptomatic course of treatment. The patient’s needs are evaluated multi-professionally by nurses and doctors, who are supported by two psycho-oncologists, an art-therapist, five physiotherapists and social workers. The palliative care unit is integrated in a network of all consultants of the entire hospital as needed and in a network of ambulatory palliative care and inpatient and ambulatory hospice care.
