History

The Institute Jules Bordet is the only autonomous hospital in Belgium totally dedicated to Cancer. It was inaugurated in 1939 but only in 1950, when Prof. Albert Claude became director, started its modern history.
Activities are focused on 3 key areas: treatment, research and teaching under the slogan “to win cancer at all costs”.
For 75 years it has maintained its social role as a public hospital.

Specialities

The Institute specializes in the research and treatment of all types of cancer.

Palliative and Supportive Care

Within the Institute there is a structured Supportive Care Unit which, for more than 10 years, has been developing pain management, psycho-oncology structures and symptom control for cancer patients.
The Pain Unit (palliative and Supportive Care) has:

  •     10 inpatient beds
  •     An outpatient clinic

The multidisciplinary Pain Clinic Team is comprised of:

  •     An internist
  •     An anaesthetist
  •     A nurse
  •     Psychologists and psychiatrists
  •     A radiotherapist
  •     A surgeon

Research into cancer pain, neuro-oncology and communication is actively conducted.
