SSIF Award for Excellence in Medical Oncology Education Goes to ESMO President-Elect
- Date: 25 Jun 2014
ESMO President-Elect Fortunato Ciardiello, Professor of Medical Oncology at the Seconda Università degli Studi di Napoli, Naples, Italy, will be honoured with the 2013 SSIF Award for medical education in oncology at the ESMO 16th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer in Barcelona, Spain, during EXCEMED's satellite symposium.
"Teaching is a very relevant part of my activity. For me this award recognises my scientific background but also my teaching," says Ciardiello, who leads the Division of Medical Oncology and the Laboratory of Experimental Therapeutics at his university.
The SSIF Award recognises those who are broadening tomorrow’s scientific horizons. Ciardiello is described by EXCEMED CEO as ‘inspiring excellence in the healthcare profession and positively influencing the next generation of medical oncologists.’
“Employing suggestions from young oncologists when crafting educational programmes could help fill knowledge gaps in medical oncology,” Ciardiello explains. ESMO has a growing number of younger members and of members from less rich European countries and non-European countries. “We should offer these people all the opportunities to help them deliver the best and most effective treatment to patients, in order to fill the gaps and the discrepancies between what can be offered in some privileged countries and the rest of the world.
My mission as ESMO President will be to provide our members with the best quality scientific education to be applied in patient care”.
According to Ciardiello, essential elements of medical oncology education are: to know your audience and their needs; ensure top-level experts present updated material in an accessible way to bring essential messages to the forefront; and offer a consistent programme where one topic builds on the other to form a learning pathway.
