Zhasmina Mihaylova is the Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at the Clinic of Haematology & Oncology, Military Medical Academy. Dr Mihaylova main interest is in the biological characterization of lung cancer and colon cancer, in predictive factors to response of targeted, particularly anti-angiogenesis therapy. She also was running together with gastroenterologists and liver surgeons an investigator initiated trial (the second of the country) of targeted and chemotherapy in colon-rectal cancer patients with primary unresectable liver metastases. She actively participated in on-going clinical trails in the department focused mainly on lung and gastrointestinal tumours.
Dr Mihaylova has started a foundation of serum and plasma bank of all cancer patients treated at the Department of Medical Oncology.
According to Bulgarian postdoc programme, after finishing Sofia Medical Academy, she contemporary has started a specialization in internal medicine and has worked in Palliative Care Team at Sofia Cancer Centre. Focusing on pain control she was one of the doctors working on breaking the state morphine-limits-use regulations in advanced cancer patients. She moved to Department of Chemotherapy and had finished the specialization of internal medicine in 1998. She gained PhD at National Cancer Institute in Quality of Life in Breast Cancer patients during chemotherapy and she acquired speciality in Oncology in 2002.
Dr.Mihaylova is a member of ESMO since 1996. She accomplished two-year fellowship programme (2002-2004) at Perugia Medical University, Department of Medical Oncology, Italy as an ESMO and AUCC (Umbrian Association against Cancer) fellow. Her scientific work was focused on cancer clinical trial design and on the measurement of biological factors in lung cancer. She has twice successfully past the ESMO Board Examination in 2002 and in 2007.
Since 2008 she is a member of East European Lung cancer Study Group, from 1996 a member of Balkan Union of Oncology (B.U.ON) and of the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR).
