Dr. Michael J. Martin obtained his Medical Graduate degree from the University College Dublin in 1991. On completion of his medical internship, he undertook an undergraduate degree in genetics through Trinity College Dublin. He continued in Trinity College to obtain his Ph.D. in genetics studying.
Following completion of his Ph.D. dissertation he returned to clinical practice full-time to complete his general medical training and commence his training in medical oncology in Ireland. He moved to the United States in 2002 to continue his medical oncology training through the oncology fellowship programme at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. During this time, in addition to his training in general medical oncology, he also continued to gain experience in the genetic aspects of oncology working in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics of the National Cancer Institute.
He returned to Ireland in 2006 when he was appointed as consultant medical oncologist to Sligo General Hospital.
