Dr. Maarit Bärlund received her medical degree and qualifications in medical oncology and radiotherapy from the University of Tampere, Finland. Her PhD thesis on studies of genetic changes in breast cancer by DNA and tissue micro array techniques was accepted in 2000. Her doctoral thesis was a collaboration project with National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, USA, where she visited as postdoctoral researcher (1999-2000).
Dr. Bärlund received the American Association of Cancer Research Young Investigator Awards in 1999 and 2000. In addition to her medical degrees, she has a Master of Science degree from the Tampere University of Technology (field of study: Medical engineering).
Dr Bärlund is currently a full-time cancer specialist at the Outpatient Clinic and Day-Care Unit at the Tampere University Hospital. The activity of this unit includes about 10 500 visits of patients per year at the outpatient clinic of the physicians and the delivery of more than 7’000 chemotherapeutic treatments per year in the day-care facilities.
Her main field of work and interests are solid tumours (especially breast), gastrointestinal, renal cancers, lung cancers, and rare tumours like GIST. She is a member of the European Society for Medical Oncology and an active member of the Finnish Society of oncology. She is married and has two children.
