ESMO National Representative in Cyprus

Dr Adamos Adamou runs a private practice in Medical Oncology in Nicosia-Limassol, Cyprus.
Until 2004, he was the Head of the Medical Oncology Unit on Breast and Gynecological Cancer at the Cyprus Oncology Centre in Nicosia, and has also spent time as Honorary Consultant and visiting Professor in London and Israel in the early 90s.
Dr Adamou is currently an elected member of the Cyprus House of Representatives, and the Head of the Cyprus National Cancer Plan. He was instrumental in obtaining official recognition of Medical Oncology as an independent medical speciality in Cyprus in 2002. In his political career, he was also a Member of the European Parliament and successfully supported the ESMO advocacy campaign for the recognition of Medical Oncology at on the European Level, achieved in March 2011.
As an MEP, Dr Adamou has also been very actively involved in health-related issues i.e. as a member co-founder and co-chair of the Members of the European Parliament Against Cancer (MAC), a group that heavily supports ESMO in keeping cancer as a high priority on the EU agenda.
Dr. Adamou is, or has been, a member and chair of several committees, including being the Chair of the ESMO Developing Countries Task Force (2005-2012), the ESMO National Representative for Cyprus (1999-2002), the Cyprus Anticancer Society (board member since 1996) and chair of the Scientific Committee of the Karaiskakio Foundation (Bone Marrow Donors), to name but a few.
Dr Adamos Adamou has received several awards – for instance, he was elected Cyprus Scientist of the Year in 2004 and received a special recognition award from the ESMO President in 2012 for his outstanding contribution to the Society at the global and EU political levels.
