Can the fellowship be carried out in the home institute?

The ESMO Fellowships are to be carried out in a Host Institute and not the home institute.

What languages are acceptable for submission of an ESMO fellowship grant?

ESMO only accepts applications in English.

Should I mail my application, or submit it electronically?

All fellowship applications are electronic and are to be completed online.

Does ESMO have to receive the Fellowship application by the deadline date?

Yes. All applicants must submit their fellowship application on time. ESMO will not accept late submissions.

Application requirements?

All applications must be submitted in English; incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Has my application been received?

You will receive an E-mail confirming receipt of application.

Is my application complete?

Each application is carefully checked by the ESMO Head office for completeness. If the application is incomplete, you will be contacted and asked to submit the missing documents immediately.

When will I find out if I received the fellowship/grant?

Applicants will be notified of the results approximately one month after the application deadline.

When will the money be transferred?

The money will be transferred to your bank account one month before your start date.

When should my project start?

The fellowship should start in the year in which it was awarded or in the early part of the following year.

When do I have to re-apply for the prolongation (second year) of my Translational Research Fellowship?

You must send a report and an application requesting to prolong the fellowship 8 months after the start date of your fellowship. The results will be communicated approximately 2 months after your prolongation request. You can find the prolongation request form under ESMO Translational Research Fellowships.

Do I have to mention that I am an ESMO Fellowship recipient in all publications related to the research project?

Yes all publications related to the research project must mention that you received an ESMO Fellowship.

Do I have to send a copy of the publication to ESMO before submission or after it has been accepted?

Please send a copy of the publication to ESMO after is has been accepted.

What are the fellowship/grant funds used for?

The ESMO Fellowship funds are intended to be the grantee’s primary salary support, equivalent to the usual and customary salaries of individuals in comparable positions at the institution. The grant includes travel and hotel expenses to the forthcoming ESMO Congress.

What are the ESMO Fellowship application deadlines?

The deadlines for all ESMO Fellowships applications are mainly 1 May, with an exception for the Clinical Unit Visits which have several deadlines throughout the year. All applications and relative documents must be submitted online.

Can I use the same research project on two different fellowships programmes?

Applications will not be accepted for more than one fellowship with the same research project.

Are there specific countries I can choose from to do my fellowship?

Preferably candidates will select a European country outside their home countries, in a host institute other than their own. In rare cases –depending on the type of project– the fellowship may take place in the home institute.

Is there a list of institutes to choose from?

ESMO does not provide a list of host institutions, however a list of institutes willing to host ESMO Fellows can be found on the ESMO website under Career Development. Applicants are not restricted to this list and are able to contact other institutes that my more closely match their fellowship requirements.

Is it possible to apply for an ESMO Fellowship if I’m not an ESMO member?

To apply for an ESMO Fellowship you are required to be an ESMO member and must have an ESMO membership ID. The apply for ESMO Membership, please go to the Membership section on this website.
