Grantholder 40 (Senior Medical Doctor): European Commission

The Institute for Health and Consumer Protection established in 2013 a Public Health Policy Support Unit to cover several horizontal aspects of public health, like nutrition, behavioural economics, surveillance (medical devices), disease data (cancer registries and rare disease registries) and healthcare quality.

For this last horizontal aspect, a project was started in 2012 on breast cancer (the European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer - ECIBC) which aims to (i) update the existing screening guidelines, (ii) create a platform for guidelines for other stages of care, and (iii) establish a set of European evidence-based standards for breast cancer care (a voluntary accreditation scheme for breast cancer services).


The successful candidate will have to support the team in all the core and side activities related to the project, including, e.g.:

  1. Advising and contributing to the knowledge base of the team in the requested fields of competence (see below under "Requirements")
  2. Updating the networking horizon, including HORIZON 2020 and other related on-going projects
  3. Organising bi-lateral and plenary meetings with stakeholders
  4. Contributing to preparation of documents related to working groups management (terms of reference, conflict of interest management, invitations and agendas, supporting documents management, etc.)
  5. Updating of project web-pages and of any ECIBC information source available to public
  6. Publication of reports and peer reviewed papers in the initiative domains

The successful candidate will have also to establish collaborations with relevant stakeholders and provide support to the team leader in granting that the oncological side of the project is correctly planned and coordinated.


Category 40 grantholder contracts are aimed at researchers holding a doctoral degree and having a minimum of 10 years of research experience after the PhD – or, in case the candidate did not obtain a doctoral degree, 15 years of experience, after first university degree giving access to doctoral studies in a field relevant to the JRC’s scientific activities.


The ideal candidate is a Medical Doctor, preferably specialised in oncology. She/he has a PhD and / or experience preferably in one or more of the following areas: Public Health, Healthcare Quality, Cancer epidemiology, Health Technology Assessment.

The candidate will be also required to have skills/experience in breast cancer care.

The candidate will be also required to have proven experience in:

  • Project coordination
  • Management of scientific literature and other knowledge sources
  • Communication and liaison, and
  • Multitasking and working to (sometimes) tight deadlines

Excellent knowledge of English (spoken and written) is essential.

Additional skills

Additional desired domains would be: guidelines development / evaluation and biostatistics applied to non-communicable diseases.
