Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland (IOSI)
Cristiana Sessa, MD, spent the last two years at the Medical School in Milano in the Dept. of Antitumor Pharmacology and at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research. She splits her time between the clinics and the laboratory and has completed a speciality in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
In 1981, she went to the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland (IOSI) in Bellinzona, directed by Franco Cavalli, as part of an EU fellowship for a programme on drug development, where she is still working more than 30 years later. Since 1983 they have been performing Phase I clinical and pharmacological studies. She is also Director of the Phase I Unit, which is in the network of many cooperative groups (EORTC, SAKK, IELSG) as well as being President of the New Drug Group of the SAKK and Director of the Clinical Trial Unit of the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC).
Her clinical activities have been oriented to New Drug Development (Phase I) in solid tumours and early phase studies (Phase I, II) in gynaecological cancers.
Since 2001, she has also been working part time in Milano at the National Cancer Institute first, and at the San Raffaele Hospital, leading the Phase I programme in Dr. Luca Gianni's Dept. of Medical Oncology. She also has teaching and tutorial activities in Medical Oncology at the Bern University.
