ESMO Election 2016-2017 Result

The ESMO Nominating Committee, on behalf of the Executive Board, is pleased to announce the results of the recent election for our President 2016-2017.

Candidates were proposed by the Nominating Committee based on recommendations from Society leaders. We had two very diverse and talented candidates: Professor Jean Yves Blay and Professor Fortunato Ciardiello, who are committed to the profession and have been actively involved with ESMO for many years.

Based on their qualifications and campaign statements, ESMO Full members have made their choice.

We wish to thank Professor Jean Yves Blay for participating in the election and recognise his dedication to ESMO. At this time, we congratulate Professor Fortunato Ciardiello for a successful election to the position of ESMO President 2016-2017.

Fortunato Ciardiello

Having the opportunity to lead ESMO as President is one of the highest honours that a European medical oncologist could dream of. I would like to thank all the ESMO members who voted for me for making this dream come true, demonstrating their appreciation for my continuous commitment to serve the Society. ESMO is home to all medical oncologists and it is ‘owned’ by its members. The privilege of being the future ESMO President will translate in a relentless commitment to serve our members, by listening to their needs and offering the tools to allow them to deliver the best treatment to cancer patients as well as to support them in their professional career.

Fortunato Ciardiello

Fortunato Ciardiello is an experienced leader with a diversified career in academia and clinical practice. He is currently:

ESMO Treasurer
Chair of the ESMO Audit Committee,
Chair of the ESMO Press & Media Affairs Committee,
Chair of the ESMO Personalised Medicine Task Force

He has also been Chair of the ESMO Translational Research Working Group as well as member of the ESMO Educational Committee, and member of the ESMO Faculty. We welcome him as our future President.
