ESMO Open: Information for Authors
ESMO Open is a new online-only, peer-reviewed, open access oncology journal published by BMJ on behalf of the European Society for Medical Oncology. The journal aims to operate a fast submission and review process with continuous publication online, to ensure that timely, up-to-date research is available worldwide. The journal adheres to a rigorous and transparent peer review process.
ESMO Open is now open for submissions. Submissions should be made through the journal’s online submission system
Articles should not have been published elsewhere or be under consideration by any other journal when submitted to ESMO Open.
Authors retain copyright in their work and articles are published under a Creative Commons licence. Publishing in ESMO Open enables you to fulfil the open access requirements of funders such as the Wellcome Trust and Research Councils UK, including using their preferred CC-BY licence.
You can opt to have your article transferred to ESMO Open if rejected from Annals of Oncology or another BMJ Journal. Once authors agree for their manuscript to be transferred to ESMO Open, there will be no need for resubmission and any reviewer comments will also be shared, resulting in a reduced time to decision.
Manuscripts will be evaluated separately by ESMO Open’s editorial team, with different criteria for acceptance. Transfer to ESMO Open does not guarantee acceptance. Please note that ESMO Open charges an article processing charge (APC) – see above for more information.

Article publishing charge
As an open access journal ESMO Open levies an article publishing charge (APC) that reflects the true cost of the publishing services provided. The standard APC for an article is EUR 2550 / GBP 1700 / USD 3000 (exclusive of VAT for EU and UK authors).
ESMO members: you will receive an introductory discounted APC as part of their benefit package. The ESMO rate is EUR 500 / GBP 400 / USD 600. ESMO members will need to provide their membership number when submitting their article, and only members in good standing will qualify for the discount. Find out more about joining ESMO here.
There are no submission or page charges, and no colour charges. Payment of the APC may be made online by credit card, or by bank transfer following receipt of an invoice. Unless a waiver has been granted, accepted articles will not be published until payment has been received.
Your institution may already have arranged to cover your publishing costs. General information about BMJ’s open access programme, including copyright policies and institutional memberships, is available on the BMJ author website.
Articles are published online approximately 30 days from processing to production. BMJ is unable to process cancellations, refunds or returns for open access charges.
